What is the difference between linux and windows, which is better?

Q. Some dell computers are loaded with ubuntu linux as an operating system. I've heard that its more efficient than windows and crashes less. What are its advantages? If i were to get a dell laptop with unbuntu loaded on it would I have a tough time figuring out how to use it?

A. Hello Bruce,
Ubuntu is an operating system that has been developed as one of the many alternatives to Windows based and Apple's Operating systems.
The crucial difference is that Ubuntu and related Linux-type operating systems are open-source, which means that a lot of software programmers around the world have worked on it and have the logic behind it accessible to all. The windows and apple family of operating systems are closed source, meaning that those system's logic is a closely guarded secret.

Therefore, Dell computer with Ubuntu installed will probably cost you less ( I hope) compared to one with Microsoft Windows based operating system.

If you plan to use your computer for something as simple as surfing the internet, chatting with your friends and watching movies and stuff, you might be fine with an Ubuntu-installed Dell computer, because of the following reasons:

1) Less number of viruses and worms (because Ubuntu is not as widespread as Microsoft windows based operating systems).

2) Lesser cost, since essentially the operating system is free whereas, a windows based Dell computer will have the cost of the operating system factored into the final price.

3) Relatively faster start-up time based on your hardware.

3) The user interface for Ubuntu is relatively easy to learn and there will be countless resources online to help you out apart from Dell's help desk.

The following reason's go against buying an Ubuntu-based Dell computer:

1) A lot of printers, cameras, web cameras still may not work, if the drivers for those devices do not exist. Most device manufacturers will give you CDs with all your devices which generally support Windows based operating systems or Apple's operating systems.

2) Some of the software may not exist for Ubuntu computers since they are still relatively few. According to one estimate, 90% of the world's computers run on Windows based systems. So it will take some time for Ubuntu like systems.

3) You may have a hard time learning the technicalities of a new operating system and it may take a bit of technical know-how and patience to solve the problems.

These are my 2 cents (it looks more than that :) )

Thanks,
Manan

What type of camcorder is best for uploading videos to the internet?
Q. I'm going to start a amateur webcast show for work and I'd like to know which out there are the best for people on a moderate budget, say 200-400 dollars.

I have zero experience with cameras and this show is basically me talking indoors behind a desk.

Also, which software would you guys reccomend using for first time video editors?

Thanks alot for all the help

A. The Canon ZR800, 900 and 930 are the least expensive camcorders available that have a mic-in jack but no manual audio control. The Canon HV20, HV30, Sony HDR-HC7 and HV9 are the least expensive camcorders with both a mic-in jack and full manual audio control.

Your computer likely has bundled video editing software - Microsoft MovieMaker (Windows XP SP1 or newer) or Apple iMovieHD (OSX).

What are the functions of the multiple monitor on a stock trader desk? what is the difference?
Q. Why do they need so many monitors to view charts and stuff and what source are they looking at ( any particular software) ??

the keyboard seems different too, where can i buy those and how much to buy all the equipments ?

A. It's quicker to have multiple displays than it is to switch between views as the eye can move faster than the computer can redraw. There's a tremendous advantage to having the extra display space. Stock trading isn't the only profession where multiple screens are in demand.

The software is likely to be specific to the exchanges that they are trading on and there's likely to be several different programs running some developed in house and some perhaps even the traders own bag of tricks. In it's heyday, Wallstreet would have one well paid systems administrator between two or three traders so that technical issues would not impede the traders. In the past, the computers were Unix based scientific workstations such as Sun and SGI, hence the system administrator and therefore had slightly different keyboard layouts than a PC. These days PC's are used as scientific workstations with Linux providing all the functionality of Unix and Windows starting to be a reasonable OS, of course, they're not limited to the computers at their desk, those displays could easily be of programs running on a number of servers in a machine room.

Connecting a laptop and desk top computer, can it be done and how?
Q. I have a laptop a dell inspiron 5000e and an hp compaq desk top both running windows xp. I want to use my laptop as my monitor for both computers, can I do this? What hardware/software/device/cable would I need to accomplish this? Both have the ioioi hookup.
I do not have a docking station for my laptop but it is wireless and the desk top isn't.

A. Why not buy a monitor for your desktop?
I don't think you can use a laptop display as a desktop PC monitor.
If just sharing an internet connection for both is your actual problem and you just failed to correctly put in words here, than buy a router (Belkin or Linksys) and connect the desktop PC wired and the laptop wireless.
You can also make your desktop wireless (I do not recommend it, since wireless is slower than wired). Just buy and install a PCI add-on wireless card.
