How should I approach entering the IT industry?

Q. I'm about to graduate with a BS in Computer Science and every time I stumble upon a listing for entry level positions the requirements are somewhat confusing to me. I'm confident in my computer skills but they ask for certain knowledge on things that I've never heard of and no idea what they're about. I know they won't teach me everything at school but how should I go about job hunting?

A. In career coaching IT students, i have learned that colleges don't always do a great job of preparing students for real world IT jobs. Broadly speaking, there are four paths in IT:
1. Software (programming)
2. Database (architecture)
2. Hardware (helpdesk)
3. LAN/security

Only in very small companies with one IT person would you wear more than one of these hats. Since you probably already have a path in mind, and chose your courses accordingly, hopefully most of the requirements you don't recognize aren't part of that path.

Another thing to know is that employers are being very silly these days about how they define jobs. So they are probably often at fault for including requirements (such as knowledge of arcane software) that simply aren't realistic for an entry level position. You will rarely be a perfect match regardless -- apply for the ones that you seem to be the best fit for.

Also, use this as an opportunity to network. Find some organizations like the one I linked to below (which is best for help desk & LAN/security peeps), go to meetings and ask questions to learn about these unfamiliar requirements. Good luck!

Anyone know a good free help desk software?
Q. I've looked everywhere for free help desk ticketing software. Anyone use one or have a list of some that I can use?

A. For my helpdesk I use a free hosted helpdesk service called mojohelpdesk

How do you get rid of a program that keeps wanting to unzip on my Mac?
Q. Every time I turn on my Mac, my Zipeg program opens up and asks me if I want to extract a file called "SafeConnectMacInstaller". It just happened a few weeks ago, but I don't know how to get rid of it. I tried extracting it but it still shows up every time I start my Macbook. I don't want to install it because I'm not sure what it is or where it came from. Any advice?

A. You can search on Google or bing if you want to know what it is.

1st thing for preventing it from starting up on the Mac would be a guess on my part because I don't know if you are running 10.x or 9 which is called Classic.

I will guess at it being 10.x.x (next time provide some details for this to get better answers, thanks.) do these steps to prevent any application from auto-starting.

1. Goto the Dock
2. Click & Hold on the Alias representing that app.
3. Menu comes up.
4. Select what you want it to do first in this case not to start/run the app.
5. Remove from Dock.

Next thing to do is Un-install it from your Hard Drive.

1. Click on HD
2. Select Column View at the top of that window.
3. Select Applications.
4. Select the App.
5. Look for Un-install - read the instructions for this app on how to do that.
6. Restart the computer to confirm that it will not start.

Second possibility you might have to remove the plist associated with this app.

btw.. If you are part of a University it could explain what I found on that SafeConnectMacInstaller.

SafeConnect

SafeConnect, not to be confused with SecureConnect, is a Network Access Control client used by the University of San Diego. On the computer, it is a simple client that checks for numerous requirements for accessing outer (non-USD) portions of the internet. The requirements include the following:

* The installation of an antivirus program
* Updated virus definitions for that program (See *Allowed List*)
* Windows Updates is activated to automatically check for updates
* No P2P (peer-to-peer) software is running
