What can someone do with a degree in Computer Information Systems?

Q. I graduated from Devry University in 2002 with a BS in Computer Information Systems. If I am not into programming, what would you suggest that someone can go into a career field with this type of degree? I am interested in hardware and software support, Internet support, Web page development, Help desk. Any other suggestions?
I have yet to land a position in the IT field. Ever since graduating in 2002 with this degree I have yet to find a position. I have lost a lot of my experience with different IT subjects. I am currently working since 2003 for a company that is not in my field.

A. Have you not worked since you got your degree in 2002?

With the degree and some experience you should be able to have a job as a Network Administrator, System Administrator or LAN Administrator. You should be able to have a very well paying job and a good position.
Forget helpdesk stuff. You should be managing servers, workstations and entire networks for companies.
If you you have this degree and aren't working in the IT field then you are selling yourself short.
You should also work on Microsoft certifications, CISCO certifications and learn Email server administration and database administration like MS SQL server and MS Exchange Server. Get your Windows 2003 MCSE and start learning Cisco routers and switches and you will really be doing good. Keep up the good work.
Buy yourself one really nice blue or black suite for interviews and get a decent resume together.

what kind of job can i get with an A+ certification?
Q. i am a ful time student at a local tech. school. hopefully i will be graduating in december of this year.

A. I assume that you mean IT job, not health care.

An A+ cert is the absolute minimum qualification just to get an entry level job. Your first job will not pay very well but just view it as continuing your education. Ideally you want to get a job with an IT outsourcing and integration firm, especially if they also do education and training for their customers, b/c ususally you will be able to sit in on classes.

The reason you want a job with an IT company for your first job, rather than working at the helpdesk of a non-IT company is that you will be exposed to many more different types of IT environments, different hardware vendors, backup software and methodolgies, and hopefully even some non-windows machines.

Good luck. Try to get your hands on SQL, Exchange, and Cisco devices. Avoid learning too much about Microsoft Office or you will be stuck supporting it for the rest of your life.

is it ok if BS computer science graduate will shift a career in Advertising/graphic design career?
Q. I graduated in college a few years ago, my degree was BS Computer Science and have worked for a few years in technical/helpdesk support/clerical jobs in an IT company. I found out to my self that I like designing than tech support and talking to grumpy clients. I wanna find out if I shift my carreer in designing if it worth it.

A. Hi, I work for an IT Contracting Specialists company in Dublin and many of our contractors started out in helpdesk. I think the problem with helpdesk roles is that they can only be undertaken for a few years before they come monotonous. Is there any opportunity within your current company to move up the ladder? A lot of our contractors started off in helpdesk, and then went one of two ways. Some moved upto exchange or user administration and from there into network administration. After that point, those that like Network admin tend to stay there, while others move into Software Development or Project Management roles. Others move from helpdesk to Web Development and from web development into software development. Maybe a question to ask yourself is, where would you like to be in ten years time or what are your ultimate career goals. If you can establish that, then maybe you can start deciding the road to take to get you to your final career destination.
