new desk top cant fined server?

Q. just bout a new compaq presario 2 weeks a go set it up on line it will dial up say connected to my internet provider but as soon as i hit internet explorer it comes up unable to fined server ive called the support ppl a hundred times and they just keep unistalling the modem and bringing it back up after about ten tryes on internet exploer it finnaly views the page

A. If you are authenticating to their network then it might be Internet Explorer. Download Firefox as you browser and see if that works.

Also make sure the built in firewall is disabled in XP...Use the help feature to find out how, a few easy steps. Also disable any other firewall software as a test.

When you are connected, go to start>run. type "cmd"> in the little black screen type 'ping www.yahoo.com' with out the quotes. You should get four replies....If its timing out then its your most likely your ISP...maybe your modem. They do go bad (even if its new).

You can also open Internet Explorer>Tools>connection tab> look for the dialup account you have in there and highlight it> Settings>Make sure Automatically Detect Settings is checked. Leave the others unchecked.

Your Host file might also be the culprit, in which case I would suggest calling your ISP and asking them to walk you through the steps to check it. Its not hard, just a lot to type out.

Another thing you might want to check is your dialup connections configuration and make sure that everything is set to dynamic. Right click you dial up connection>Properties>Select TCP/IP in the protocol list and go to its properties>make sure everything is checked to automatically recieve settings. Click Advanced and make sure you do not have a Default Gateway IP address anywhere in there.

You can also try a new modem, you can find them super cheap any where (under $20). They come with very simple instructions and are easy to install.

Also, if you do call you ISP again ask them to help you check you "Init-String" on your modem some times that could be whacked out.

Truth is it could be a bunch of different things or several things at the same time. Hopefully my steps might help out.

Best of luck.

Linux info?
Q. What is a good Linux O.S. out there. I see so much but dont know what one to get. And where is a site I can download the full O.S. and things I need for useing it for gaming / playing DVDs /online chat /emails from yahoo and going on the net. There the only things I do so far and what I use my desk top for.

A. Ubuntu is quite popular and seems to be the best currently for windows users switching to Linux.
Here's some links you may find of interest.

Laptop Keyboard Not Responding?
Q. I just got this thing from newegg 2 weeks ago and have been loving every minute of it....except...the damn keyboard suddenly stopped working.

This happened to me about a week after I bought it seemingly out of nowhere and then fixed itself about a half hour later. I thought it was just some anomaly. Well it happened again today and it still hasn't recovered despite several restarts and uninstalling of drivers. The problem appears to be software related as the keys work fine before Vista loads.

I called MSi and the dude told me to try the recovery cd and if that didn't work to send it back. I feel that this should be easier to fix then that. The last thing I want to do is ship this back. I have read a lot of forums and keyboard problems don't seem uncommon.

Anyone have any idea how to fix this problem? The touch keys all work but I'm unsure if the touchpad works as it was deactivated and now I can't use the keyboard to reactivate it. Help is appreciated.

A. You said you had called MSI for help and that didn't work, so if I were you, I'd certainly be sending this computer back! It could be just a driver problem or something worse. You're lucky they aren't screwing you around with try this and try that! I'd had that thing on its way back to Newegg by now. I had a HP desk top that had problems that I fought with for two months! I was so frustrated and pissed off because you never knew whether a ten minute job would take ten minutes or an hour! I had what they call a "lemon". I think that's what you may have too. I'd get one problem fixed and something else would happen. I imagine they figured it was something I was doing wrong until I had a computer "geek" take a look at it and even he got frustrated. When I called them with my friend at the computer controls and they couldn't get the computer to work, they decided to build me a new computer ASAP. Two weeks later I had a new computer and returned the "lemon" to them, and haven't had a problem sense. Good luck with whatever you decide to do, but that's what a warranty is for.

How can I find a job I actually like?
Q. I am a recent college graduate. I have a B.S. in Applied Arts and Science, concentrating in Information Technology, Software Technology, and Science. Well, throughout my college career I changed majors 3 times, I started in Software Engineering, switched to Information Technology, and then ended up with my mixed degree that no one has heard of.

Long story short, I hate my major and I don't like working in those kinds of environments. I completed an internship in Information technology that left me going home everyday feeling depressed and stupid.

I'm currently working in a call center environment and I hate it. I liked the job when I started, and the people are okay, but the working conditions are ridiculous. Basically I work in a small room with 20 people and don't even have my own desk. All I have is a computer and a chair at a table with a few inches between me and the next person. In addition, most people on the phone insult me and are just plain miserable.

To top it all off, I have a cold this week and took a couple of days off because I can barely talk, and my supervisor told me they might just replace me since I've been sick. Sweet, huh?

So, in conclusion, I feel like my life is in a never-ending rut. I hate my degree, my major, and my job. I'm broke and I really need a job that can pay my bills and my student loans. I don't really know what my interests are, so it leaves me ending up at jobs that make me cry myself to sleep.

I would just like some advice, from people who have been in the same situation, or advice on how to land a job that I'll enjoy...or even advise on what types of jobs are enjoyable (I know that work isn't meant to be fun, but it should at least not cause depression).

Thanks!

A. You will probably hate most jobs you have in life. That is _just_ a fact of life. Jobs first seem interesting. But, no matter how interesting they are, if you have to be there certain hours, daily, they can become boring...

From the time I was seven I loved photography, and learned all I could about it. By the age of 12, was making more money at it, than most men at full time jobs. Was lucky, my Dad was a fireman, so hung out at the station, when there was a fire, would jump on my bike and take pictures. Id get there, before a photographer from major papers could, and by the time they did, the most dramatic opportunities were gone, that I caught.

One day one of them saw my camera, asked if he could buy my pictures. Said he'd make sure I got an 8x10 copy of each, and get paid $25 for each one they printed. IT was a Million Dollar Fire in 1942, today that would be like 20 million. They printed six of my pictures in the center fold of the Record American. Photo Journalism was very interesting then.

But, after years came to realize he Hobby I loved, was no longer one. As an Artist, it had been very interesting, but when it got so I had to do it day, after day, after day and NEVER take the pictures for my own interest. Never spend time developing my talents as an artist, it became boring. So, I QUIT, a very good paying job. Went back to school and studied Psychology. As Im the type of person who _learns_ everything possible about their profession made a decent income.

BUT, then when not working, went back to Photography as a Hobby and an Art form. Took only the images that I wanted to create. Went to seminars held by Ansel Adams and Weston, etc who became my mentors. Now at 80+ am still traveling the US in a Motorhome, creating works of art, from landscapes in National and State Parks.

Get a good paying job, make the money you need to live. Put your BEST into it, so eventually you can be one of the highest paid in the field. Be the first on the job, the last to leave, and learn all you can.

But, then find something of interest which will make you Happy. Something which will utilize interesting talents. Something which requires you use your BRAIN, to become the Best You Can Be. Something which will always challenge your abilities to create, etc. Even if it may be something no one would be interested in paying you to do. .

Someone in a Restaurant asked me the other day,
"What is the most important two things you have learned in your life?"

My response, 1., "Never stop learning." Knowledge is the most important thing we can squire, and there is no limit to what we can learn. At over 80 today, my goal is still to learn something NEW every day, and most days I achieve that goal.

2. That NOTHING makes us happy. Nothing we can buy or squire with money. Nothing that others can do for us. That Happiness comes from within. It is our attitude or state of mind which creates Happiness and if we focus on what we HAVE ALREADY that makes life a pleasure, we can be happy. Instead of thinking all the time about things we do NOT have, spend TEN MINUTES twice a day, thinking about what creates pleasure or happiness in life. Sit or lie down for ten minutes, and review in whatever way you can, the good things in life. Be aware of what you FEEL about them, what you like about them, what you can see, touch, taste, whatever....

These things do NOT have to be the best vacation or relationship, etc, though you can also use them. But, think about a time you drank a COLD glass of water when your mouth was dry or parched and how it felt. Think about times you enjoyed eating things, your favorite fruit, etc. Savored a glass of Orange Juice. Ate a really good Hamburger when you were really hungry. Laying on the beach, watching the clouds go by. Sitting looking at the stars at night. Times others thought you did something well. Times you enjoyed good communication. Times you knew someone trusted you. The taste of Popcorn or other things yo have not had for a long time. Just anything or anywhere your mind takes you as you think of one thing after another, for ten minutes or more. Do that also again each night as you go to bed at night, until you drift off to sleep.

There is a book you may find in a library, "Fourteen Thousand Things to be Happy about." None of them is about making money or having a lot of money to do things with. IF you cant think of many, get the book, you will be amazed at how many of these experiences you have had already. Then, go out and create some more happy times for yourself, and think about them....
