What laptop should I buy for school?

Q. hey guys, going away to college in a few months, and I just want some opinions on what the best laptop is.
Price: not really an issue, but not too expensive
OS: I want it to come with windows 7, but I plan on dual booting ubuntu
Gaming: not much, but I'd like to be able to play Napoleon Total War on it
Plans: I'd like it to last the next few years
Things I don't like: Bloatware

Note: I am UNCONDITIONALLY not going Mac. Do not suggest it.

A. try to get a laptop with either an i5 or i7 processor and you should have 8 gb of ram if you want to play total war(you can save money if you buy the ram separate and know how to install it yourself). Keep in mind that entertainment laptops that have a good enough graphic card to play total war has a battery life around 3-3.5 hours whereas those that don't can last 8+ hours. Have your name ingrave on it so everyone knows that it is yours. The most important thing is to get lojack on the laptop(both software and hardware) and maybe a attachment chain to tie it to a desk.

both sony vaio f series and dell XPS have good specs for around $1500 dollars. If you are clumsy and don't want your laptop breaking after you spill soda on it or drop it repeatly, get a toughbook from panasonic. It has a cool metal case and you can probably smack people around with it.

If price is really not an option get alienware. Also cheap laptops with core 2 duo processors can be bought for $200-400.

Any good career fields in computers?
Q. I am in the end of my junior year of highschool and have been thinking about a career. I know for a fact I want to work with a computer but Im not sure wich one would be the funnest. I was wondering does anyone have any careers that they would like to brag about or know that are fun or worth the work? Also how I can get that job Like what classes I need in college etc.

A. Information Technology (IT) is a great career field, but like "Medicine" its actually a number of different jobs. I've worked as a Network Engineer, computer technician, technical support/help desk, web design, and programming. Each requires a different skill set.

What I'd really recommend is start a general Computer Information Systems degree at your local university. While you are in the first year, you should find out what you enjoy. Most people either like hardware or software, but rarely does someone truly enjoy both.

Have you ever done anything with Linux? Try finding an old computer and then load Ubuntu. Then, start learning PERL.

By messing with the old computer you'll get your feet wet on hardware. Because its Linux, chances are you'll have to learn about something on the hardware to get the Linux up 100%. Ubuntu is the easiest load and you may get by with no tweaks, but you will have fun doing it.

Then, learning PERL script will give you a little look at scripting. That should let you know whether you will enjoy programming.

I love working in IT. You must constantly learn or you will be left behind. There is always a new challenge to overcome.

Old Toshiba laptop(ext CD)w/ unlic version of windows (from ebay)that died. How do I load Linux op system cd?
Q. This is one of the very thin Toshiba laptops (800 MHz P3). I tried just starting up the laptop with the Operating system in the CD, but it didn't read it. I'm not a hacker, but I know my way around a computer well enought that I should be able to do something like this without spending $ 150 for the local computer store to do it for me. I want to see if 'joe on the street' (me) can install his own operating system and open office and get a laptop running without paying Microsoft what amounts to 3 car payments.

Gracias!!!

A. The short answer is .....yes. You can do this. I would recommend Ubuntu or Kbuntu for an OS. You can get them both FREE for the link below.

You can install two ways, by booting to the cd or by turning the machine on and putting the cd in. It will give you the option to install from the desk top. It will have an icon with "install" written below. It come with open office and gimp (image editing) software included.
You can even install it to a external hard drive if you want.
