Q. When I say 3d imaging software, I mean things like auto desk maya, google sketch up, true space and etc. I am already affiliated with all of these programs, but they are extremely difficult to use (except for google sketch up). I need a program that gives me the ability to create realistic renders, make animated scenes (and render those too), easily create models and lets me export my animations. But I need one that is cost effective, in other words, I'd like more bang for my buck.
A. One word my friend.... Blender - http://www.blender.org , I'll not try and kid you here, the interface is quite daunting to begin with and takes time to learn, but the results you can produce are easily comparable to Maya or 3DSMax and the best thing about it is that it's completely free and open-source and that's about as much bang for your buck as you're gonna get. It will render out in over 15 formats including AVI, AVIJpeg, Jpeg , PNG, BMP etc etc, and as it is open-source there is a huge community of users, tutorials and forums freely available on the net to help you along the way. As an added bonus it also has a built in game engine that will let you produce stand alone executable games without any programming! What more could you ask? A. Let's start with answering why there are so many screens. The answer is SPEED. Whenever some piece of information comes out about some company that will affect its stock price, as a trader, you literally have a split second to act on it, or others will beat you to it, and you risk potentially losing profits. If, for example, you are following 40 stocks, you cannot afford to switch views to see info on a few at a time, you want to see them all at once, and that takes screen space. Other things that you will need screens for is news feeds, e-mail alerts, instant messaging, etc. A trader needs as much information as they can get to make very fast decisions. Depending on their role and style, each trader, or group of traders will have the information that they need most, and often as much as they can follow at once.
As for the keyboard you see, it is usually a Bloomberg terminal, but can be some other custom trading platform. I think the costs for a Bloomberg are now running at $2500 per month to subscribe to the service for the first machine, and $1000 per month for each additional terminal. There are probably other costs involved, like setup, and the actual hardware. Bloomberg usually takes up two screens, and the reason it's popular is because it provides very accurate and very recent (up to the second) info on pretty much any investment trading on any market in the world. The keyboard layout allows for shortcut keys to be more recognizable. You can Google it for more info.
